A student asked me today where to place your fingers when playing notes or chords. The best place to place your fingers is right behind the fret. So if you are supposed to play a not on the 6th string third fret, you count up to the third fret from the nut. Then place your finger right behind that third fret wire.

It can be tough to get your fingers into that position when you are trying to play chords. You want to try to make the transition quickly and sometimes you find your fingers floating to the middle of the fret instead of just behind the firewire. My suggestion is to do your best to get it as close as possible. The notes will sound clearer and better.
