What Gear Do I Need to Play Guitar on JamKazam?

Equipment may vary but each musician needs the following gear to play on Jamkazam.

Jamkazam will help you connect your instrument to your computer so that you can play guitar live online. Here is the required equipment you will need to connect and start jamming with others.

To use JamKazam to play guitar live online you will need a computer. The JamKazam application does not run on Chromebooks, Linux, iOS, or Android devices so you will need a computer running with Windows 10 or Mac OS X 10.8 or higher.

Personally, I prefer Macs, but if you are a Windows person you will have fun too.

Audio Interface

You will need an audio interface to connect your guitar to your computer because the audio interface digitizes the audio from your instrument and/or vocals into a format that your computer can process. A decent audio interface is your most important purchase decision and a must to have if you want to play guitar live online with other musicians. Make sure you choose an interface with enough ports for your voice and instruments. You will need at least two jacks, one for your microphone and one for your instrument.

Here are a few recommendations based on their performance with Jamkazam.

JamKazam recommends using headphones for your sessions so you can hear yourself and everyone else in the session. The headphones get plugged into your audio interface, using a full-sized 1/4″ headphone jack. If you don’t have a pair of headphones with the larger 1/4″ headphone jack, you’ll need to get a pair of these. However, you can get an adapter for the jack and that will work. You will also want to consider the length of the cord that connects to your headphones.

I recommend Studio Monitor headphones. I also recommend wired rather than wireless to avoid any latency. Here are some I like.

Ethernet Port And Cable

It is strongly advised that you need to connect your computer to your home router using an Ethernet cable. The reason why is that it gives you a wired connection from your computer to your home Internet service. A wired connection will perform very well and very reliably, while a WiFi/wireless connection will create major latency problems in your sessions.

First, you need an Ethernet cable. You plug one end of the Ethernet cable into one of the ports on your home router. Second, you plug the other end of the cable into an Ethernet port on your computer. You can buy 100-foot Ethernet cables for about $10 to run from your router to other rooms in your house.

Some computers don’t have a built-in Ethernet port, therefore, you’ll need to buy an Ethernet adapter. These typically cost about $20.

Broadband Internet Service

You need to have access to broadband Internet service at home. Typical cable broadband and fiber broadband that is available to most households work fine.

Different Bandwidths:

  • In a session with just 2 musicians, while using both audio and video, you’ll need about 1Mbps both down and up.
  • To play in a session with 5 musicians using just audio, you’ll need about 1Mbps both down and up.
  • For a session with 5 musicians using both audio and video, you’ll need about 3Mbps both down and up.

Also, it’s important to understand that more bandwidth does not mean lower latency. These two things have nothing to do with each other. Bandwidth can affect the quality of the audio and video in your session if you have very little bandwidth. But buying a ton of bandwidth won’t lower latency in your sessions.

Microphone With XLR Cable And Mic Stand

Those who are playing an acoustic instrument like a violin, trumpet, or acoustic guitar, will need a microphone to capture the sound of your instrument in order to play guitar online live with others. If you sing, you will definitely need a microphone to capture the sound of your vocals. In addition, a mic stand will also be a great thing to have so that you can rest the mic safely on a stand.

You will also use a mic for talking with other musicians in your session, or you can use the mic built into your computer to chat with others in sessions.

If you play a larger instrument like a piano or an acoustic drum kit, you will need two microphones – one for the instrument and one for your voice to talk with others in sessions – because you can’t effectively use the mic built into your computer for chatting with these types of instruments. Therefore, get at least one good microphone.

You can use the webcam that is built into your computer, or you can use an external webcam.

In conclusion, this gives you all the basics of what you’ll need. For more in-depth explanations of gear based on different instruments, you can refer to Jamkazams gear requirements by instrument help docs.
